What we collect
Information you give us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in the message. We use it to reply and to act on corrections.
Information collected automatically
Our web server records standard access logs: your IP address, browser and device type, the page requested (including any query string), the referring page, and the time. Google Analytics records which pages you view and how you use them, as described below. Site search runs in your browser against a copy of our page index, so what you type isn't sent to our server while you search. The search results page puts your search words in its address (for example /search/?q=cat), so opening it is logged like any other page.
What we don't collect
There are no accounts, sign-up forms, or newsletters on this site. We don't ask for payment details or for health information about you or your animals, and we don't sell personal information.
How we use it
- To operate, secure, and troubleshoot the site.
- To understand which pages are useful, so we can improve or retire content.
- To reply to your messages and process corrections.
- To comply with legal obligations.
Cookies and analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to measure how pages are found and read. Where consent is required (the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, or if your device's time zone is there), you'll see a choice. Before you choose, Google Analytics receives only cookieless signals with no identifiers, and analytics cookies are set only if you accept. Elsewhere, analytics cookies are on by default, and you can turn them off at any time under Cookie settings in the site footer.
When you search, Google Analytics also receives the words you searched for and how many results came back, so we can see what readers look for and which topics are missing. Anything that looks like an email address or a long number is removed from the search words before they are sent.
The cookies involved are:
_gaand_ga_*, set by Google Analytics to distinguish visits (up to two years).opg_consent, which remembers your cookie choice (180 days).
We don't use advertising cookies, and advertising storage is always switched off. Affiliate partners may set their own cookies on their own sites after you follow a link to them.
Third parties
We rely on a small set of service providers: our hosting provider (Amazon Web Services), Google Analytics, and Google Workspace for email. They process data on our behalf. If we join affiliate networks, they're listed on our affiliate disclosure page and act under their own privacy policies.
Retention
- Server access logs are kept for about 30 days, then deleted.
- Google Analytics event data is kept for 14 months.
- Email is kept for as long as needed to handle your message and any follow-up, then deleted.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict use of your personal information, to object to certain processing, to data portability, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We don't sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under applicable law.
To exercise any right, email contact@openpetguide.com. We'll respond within the period required by law. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Children
This site isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
We'll update this page when our practices change and revise the date at the top. Material changes will be noted on the page.
